A short history
The discovery of the image ofSanto Niño dates back to the 16th century when Magellan and other Spaniards arrived in the island of Cebu. The people in Cebu was used to seeing a variety of ships from different countries. The arrival of the Spaniards filled them with a lot of misgivings. The Spaniards do not have any goods, commodities or commerce to barter unlike the Chinese and Japanese. The only thing they had was their faith in the Savior who died on the cross.
The Spaniards planted a cross on the island and claimed it in the name of a king who lived far away. The lightning from a gun and the thunder released by a cannons made the declaration of their King more dreadful. The natives could do nothing but to listen and submit themselves to the conversion of a new faith.
Lapu-lapu and the other island chieftains objected to pay taxes to a king they could never behold. Instead, Rajah Humabon, chieftain of Sugbu asked the Spaniards to pay the regular tribute upon camping on Sugbu shores. But the Spaniards objected their demands. Noble warriors from Sugbu believed that a king earned his title from an actual battle.

For unknown reasons or tradeoffs, Rajah Humabon and his wife Hara Amihan allowed themselves to be baptized on April 14, 1521 after a Siamese trader convinced Humabon of the foolishness of combating with an evident force. Humabon was baptized as Carlos, in honor of Carlos Primero and his wife received the name of the queen mother. The navigator, Ferdinand Magellan gave the queen a gift, which was the image of the Holy Child.
After the death of Magellan, the image was found by a sailor, Juan de Camus, and was placed in the custody of the Augustinian Church. Six years after, the image was enthroned in the very first Christian church named Santisimo Nombre de Jesus.
